Why Camera Angle Matters for AI Tracking
AI player tracking works by identifying a specific person in the video and following them frame by frame through the match. The AI needs to see the player clearly enough to distinguish them from other athletes, maintain tracking when players overlap or run past each other, and re-identify the player after temporary occlusions (when another player or the referee blocks the view).
Camera angle affects all three of these tasks:
- Visibility: A higher angle reduces the frequency of occlusions. When the camera is at ground level, players constantly block each other. From above, you can see more of each player's body and jersey, even when they are close to other athletes.
- Separation: Elevation creates vertical separation between players in the image. Two players standing side by side look like a single blob from ground level but appear as clearly distinct individuals from above.
- Field coverage: A centered, elevated position captures the most field area in a single frame. The AI can track the player across the full width and length of the field without losing them to a camera pan or a narrow field of view.
These factors are universal. Whether you are recording for AI player tracking, manual clip editing, or coaching review, the same camera principles apply. The difference is that AI tracking is more sensitive to poor angles because the algorithm cannot use context and intuition the way a human editor can.

The Ideal Setup: Elevated Midfield
If you have the option, the best recording position hits three criteria:
Height: Roughly 15–20 Feet
Roughly fifteen to twenty feet of elevation is a good target range. It is high enough to see over players' heads and reduce occlusions, but not so high that players become tiny dots in the frame. At this height, you can generally see jersey numbers, body posture, and individual movement patterns — all of which help the AI maintain accurate tracking. These are guidelines, not exact requirements; a few feet higher or lower still produces good results.
In practical terms, this height corresponds to the top of a typical set of bleachers, a small press box, or a portable camera tower. Some dedicated sports camera systems (like Veo and Trace) are designed to be mounted on tall tripods or poles that reach this height range.
Position: Centered at the Halfway Line
Centering the camera at midfield gives the most balanced view of both halves of the field. From this position, neither goal is dramatically farther from the camera than the other, and players in both halves of the field are at roughly similar distances. This consistency helps the AI because the player's apparent size does not change dramatically as they move up and down the field.
Orientation: Landscape, Capturing the Full Width
Record in landscape orientation with a wide enough angle to capture the full width of the field — or as close to full width as possible. A wider frame means the AI can track the player across more of the field without needing to pan the camera. If the camera must pan to follow play, smooth, slow pans are far better for tracking than quick jerky movements.

Good Alternatives When You Cannot Get the Ideal
Most game-day situations do not offer a perfect elevated midfield position. Here are alternatives that still produce good tracking results, ranked from best to most compromised:
Top of the Bleachers, Sideline
If your field has bleachers along the sideline, sitting at the top row with a tripod-mounted camera or phone is a solid option. You get 8–12 feet of elevation depending on the bleacher size, and the sideline position provides a good cross-field view. This is the most common setup for families recording youth games, and it produces reliable tracking results.
The main limitation is that one end of the field will be farther from the camera than the other. Players near the far goal will appear smaller. This is manageable — the AI can still track them — but tracking may be slightly less precise for those distant moments.
Press Box or Elevated Structure
High school and some club facilities have a press box or announcer's booth above the bleachers. If you can access it, this is often the best available position — it provides both height and a centered view. Ask the facility manager if you can set up a camera there. Many are happy to accommodate if you ask before the game.
Behind the Goal, Elevated
Recording from behind one goal — elevated on a hill, a parking structure, or a raised area behind the end line — gives a good view of the near half of the field but a very distant view of the far half. This angle is commonly used in professional goalkeeper analysis but is not ideal for outfield player tracking. Use it as a last resort if no sideline position is available.
Sideline, Ground Level
Standing on the sideline with no elevation is the least ideal position that still produces usable results. You will have frequent occlusions (players blocking each other), and the AI will need to work harder to re-identify the player after losing sight of them. However, if this is your only option, it still works — especially if you are close to the halfway line and the footage is stable (use a tripod or monopod, not handheld).
Phone and Tripod Setups
Most families recording youth soccer games are using a smartphone. Modern phones produce excellent video quality — often 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second — which is more than sufficient for AI tracking. The camera itself is not the bottleneck. The setup is.
The Minimum Viable Setup
A phone mounted on a tripod at the top of the bleachers, recording in landscape mode at the highest available resolution. That is it. This setup costs under $30 for a basic tripod with a phone mount and produces footage that works well with AI auto-tracking tools like PlayerTrac.
What to Set on Your Phone
- Resolution: 4K if available, 1080p at minimum. Higher resolution means more pixels on each player, which helps the AI identify and track them.
- Frame rate: 30 fps is fine. 60 fps produces smoother footage but doubles the file size without a proportional improvement in tracking accuracy.
- Orientation: Landscape. Always landscape. A vertically recorded game cuts off most of the field and makes tracking far more difficult.
- Stabilization: Turn on optical or electronic stabilization if your phone offers it. This reduces small vibrations from wind or the bleacher structure.
- Lock exposure and focus: Many phone camera apps let you lock the exposure and focus so the camera does not constantly readjust during the game. This prevents the annoying moments where the camera refocuses on a closer object and the field goes blurry.
Tripod Recommendations
A full-size tripod (50–65 inches) is better than a tabletop tripod because it lets you position the phone higher, above the heads of spectators sitting in front of you. Look for a tripod with a phone clamp attachment that grips securely — phones falling off tripods during a game is surprisingly common with cheap clamps.
If you record games frequently, consider a tripod with a fluid head (the part that allows panning). A fluid head enables smooth, slow pans if you need to follow play across the field. Jerky panning is one of the worst things for AI tracking.

GoPro and Action Camera Options
GoPros and similar action cameras are sometimes used for game recording because they are small, durable, and can be mounted in creative positions. They can work for AI tracking, but with some important caveats.
Advantages
- Easy to mount: GoPros can be clipped to fences, poles, or goal frames. This flexibility lets you get the camera into positions that might be difficult with a phone on a tripod.
- Wide field of view: GoPro lenses are very wide, which can capture the full width of the field from a closer position.
- Weather resistant: GoPros handle rain, cold, and dust better than most phones.
Disadvantages
- Barrel distortion: The wide-angle GoPro lens creates noticeable distortion at the edges of the frame. Players near the sides of the image appear stretched and warped, which can interfere with AI tracking accuracy. Some newer GoPro models offer a "linear" lens mode that reduces this — use it if available.
- Low mounting positions: Clipping a GoPro to a fence gives you roughly 4–6 feet of elevation — below ideal. Occlusions will be more frequent.
- Small sensor: In lower light conditions (evening games, overcast days), GoPro footage tends to be grainier than phone footage, which can affect tracking.

Handheld Recording
Holding the camera in your hand introduces constant shake and micro-movements. Over 90 minutes, even a steady hand produces footage that jitters enough to confuse AI tracking. Always use a tripod, monopod, or some form of physical stabilization. This is the single most impactful thing you can do for tracking quality.
Too Low, Too Close
Recording from ground level right next to the sideline puts the camera at the same height as the players. From this angle, players are constantly blocking each other, and the AI loses tracking frequently. Even a few feet of elevation — standing on a cooler, a low wall, or the first bleacher row — makes a noticeable difference.
Excessive Panning and Zooming
Rapid camera movements during recording are terrible for AI tracking. Every time the camera moves quickly, the image blurs for a few frames, and the AI may lose the tracked player. If you must pan, do it slowly and smoothly. Avoid zooming in and out during the game — pick a zoom level that captures as much of the field as possible and leave it.
Portrait Orientation
Recording a soccer game in portrait (vertical) mode cuts the horizontal field of view roughly in half. The AI can only track the player when they are in the narrow strip of field visible in the frame. Always record in landscape.
Obstructed Views
Nets, fences, posts, and other obstacles between the camera and the field reduce video quality and create visual noise that can confuse the AI. Position the camera so the lens has a clear, unobstructed sightline to the field. If shooting through a chain-link fence is unavoidable, press the lens as close to the fence as possible — the fence links will blur out and become less visible.
Unstable Surfaces
Setting your tripod on soft ground, a wobbly bleacher seat, or an uneven surface means the camera will shift during the game — especially if spectators are moving around. On bleachers, place the tripod legs on the flat seat surface rather than on the edge. On grass, push the tripod legs firmly into the ground or weight the tripod with a bag.

Start Recording Before Kickoff

Charge Your Battery

Check Storage Space
A 90-minute 4K recording can be 15–30 GB depending on your phone and settings. Make sure you have enough free storage before the game starts. Running out of space mid-recording is a common and frustrating problem.
Avoid Touching the Camera During the Game
Every time you touch the phone or adjust the tripod, you introduce a bump into the footage. Set up before kickoff, start recording, and leave it alone until the half. If you need to check the framing, wait for a stoppage in play and make a gentle adjustment.
